Copper-Silver Alloy Brooch

Title

Copper-Silver Alloy Brooch

Subject

brooch, roman, early_byzantine, copper, silver, gilded, 4century, 5century

Description

This disk brooch with a hinged pin is intact. The brooch has several areas of decoration. At the center there is a protruding conical shape (hollow on the underside), resembling a late Roman shield boss, ending with a spherical knob at the point. Around the central design are two raised circles with a beaded circle between them. The circular portion of the disc is surrounded by a scalloped edge with ten ray-shaped points. Each of the rays ends in a small sphere, and the edge is bordered by a line of beads. The brooch was made of a shiny copper-silver alloy, and the central knob was gilded. There are some areas of green patina, particularly on the underside of the brooch
