Monkey Holding a Long Spike in its Forepaws, 500-650
Title
Monkey Holding a Long Spike in its Forepaws, 500-650
Subject
Byzantine, 6century, 7century, bronze, statue, cast
Description
A small bronze statue of a monkey holding a spike. The statue was probably intended as a decoration though the statue itself displays the Byzantine's knowledge of the world, trade, and art. There have been suggestions that it could have been part of a lamp used by military officers. The figure's species has also been questioned by some. It has been likened to a human sculpture in the Cyprus Museum, and may be human itself.
